Current situation

The building of the mosque was converted into a history museum by the Armenian authorities. Currently, Armenians present this mosque to the world as the “Persian Mosque.” At a government meeting in Armenia on December 10, 2015, a project related to the Blue Mosque, considered a rare example of Eastern architecture, was discussed based on a proposal by the Ministry of Culture. Since the land on which the Blue Mosque stands is state property of the Republic of Armenia, it has been included in the state register of non-transferable historical and cultural monuments. It was also decided that the Blue Mosque and its surrounding area would be handed over, free of charge, under the right of use for 99 years, to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Armenia, to serve as a cultural center.

Information:

The Blue Mosque – Huseynali Khan Mosque

Construction of the mosque began in 1760 and was completed in 1764 by Huseynali Khan Qajar (1762–1783), the ruler of Yerevan at the time, and the mosque was named after him. With a width of 66 meters and a length of 97.2 meters, the Blue Mosque was the largest among the mosques in Yerevan. The mosque originally had four minarets (three of which were destroyed, with only one remaining), a spacious courtyard with a fountain and pool, and a rich library. The mosque was set on fire twice by Armenians in the 20th century, in 1918 and 1955.

The building of the mosque has been turned into a history museum by the Armenian authorities. Today, Armenians present this mosque to the world as the “Persian Mosque.” At a meeting of the Armenian government held on December 10, 2015, a project related to the Blue Mosque, considered a rare example of Eastern architecture, was discussed based on the Ministry of Culture’s submission. The site of the Blue Mosque, as a historical and cultural monument, has been included in the state register of non-transferable historical and cultural monuments as it is state property of the Republic of Armenia. It was also decided that the Blue Mosque and its surrounding area would be handed over free of charge, under the right of use for 99 years, to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Armenia to serve as a cultural center.
