It was built of river stones and red bricks. In 1837, the Russians built a military fortress on a high place of the Arpa River. Gumri was named Alexandropol in 1840 and Leninakan in 1924 in honor of Nicholas I's wife Alexandra.

Azerbaijanis lived in Gumru until 1830. Armenians relocated from Erzurum were resettled and the place was Armenianized.
